January 30 is National Escape Day! Escape your Sunday chores, gym routine, and playdates with a few hours of fun and fresh air on the First Creek Canyon trail.

This trail is a perfect winter’s day hike as we walk across the open desert on sandy soil, admire a beautiful array of cactus and pines. The creek is likely to be dry, but there is easy scrambling at the end of the trail where we’ll stop to play and snack.

Afterward, for whoever would like to join us, we will have lunch at Cottonwood Cafe in Blue Diamond, which is just a few minutes’ drive from this trailhead.

• Ladies, this is an easy low elevation hike. Both kid and dog-friendly.
